How Search Engines Work and People Find You on the Web

Business owners are always asking us questions about search engine optimization and how to get on the first page of Google. The problem they have is that there is so much information available and it's very often too technical for the average person to understand. All this does is leave the business owner afraid and not knowing what to do. It also makes it easy to become a victim of receiving bad services or advice.

If you think about it, anyone can put up a website and say they do whatever. So someone could just say that they provide "SEO Services" but because there are no certification requirements, you don't really know what you're going to get. Here are some questions you can ask to help you steer clear of those looking to make a quick dollar.

Questions to Ask When Hiring for SEO Services:

How will you improve my search engine rankings?

The answer should include something about an initial review of the site to look for technical problems like broken links and 404 error pages.

• Can you guarantee me that my website will get on the first page of Google?

If they answer yes, thank them for their time and hang up. It's impossible to guarantee a number one ranking on any search engine.

• What kind of changes will you be making to my site?

There could be a number of things that need to be changed and you should know what they plan to do.

• What are your fees?

SEO Services can get pretty pricey so it's important to know how much you will be charged. Prices range anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars a month.

Those questions should help you filter out any scam artists looking to sell you a bill of goods. It also a pretty good idea to have a little knowledge on what SEO is. A great place for getting started with your research is the MOZ SEO Guide for Beginners.

How People Find You on the Web

What I thought we would go over next is the way the search engines actually work and how people are finding you on the web.

First, let's look at how people find you on the web. There are 3 ways people make it to your website.

1. Directly - one way people will make it to your website is by just typing in your domain name and going straight there.
2. Indirectly - another way people will make it to your website is by a link they found somewhere else. Someone may have a link to your website on their website or there is a link to your website on one of the social media channels.
3. Search - the last way people will make it to your website is by doing a search on a search engine. The words that are typed into the search engine are called keywords or a keyword phrase. For example:

No matter how people make it to your website, it will fit into one of the categories I've just listed. Now let's talk about how search engines drive traffic to your site. The search engines get involved when you are doing a search for something. They are responsible for providing the results you see.

How Search Engines Work

Search engines use these things called "spiders" to crawl every page of every website, scan every word, every photo, and every link. Then they index all of this information. The search engines use complex set of rules in order to rank web pages by measuring relevance, trust, and authority.

Armed with this information, you should be able to see that the biggest part of your search engine optimization strategy should revolve around the use of keywords. These are just the basics of search engine optimization but are the foundation to build on.
